Gelling Agent for Plant Study

Gellan Gum is a gelling agent used for plant tissue and cell culture. It produces a high transparent gel, which allows better observation of root growth compared with conventional agar gel.

Comparison Data with Agar Gel

Root growth observation

Seeds of Komatsuna (Brassica rapa var. perviridis) were inoculated in petri dishes containing a MS medium with either 0.8% agar or 0.2% Gellan Gum under sterile conditions. The seedlings were transferred to plant boxes containing the same medium 5 days later.

Specification

Passing Rate (5g/l gel, 490 nm) % more than 70%
Loss on drying % less than 15.0%
pH (3g/l, suspension, 25 °C) 4.5-6.5

Application 1 : Culture of Rice (Oryza sativa)

The same growth rate as Agar gel

Seeds of Rice (Oryza sativa) were inoculated in petri dishes containing a MS medium with either 0.8% 0f agar or 0.2% of Gellan gum under sterile conditions .
